Football as a Tool for Integration and Development
This month, we had the privilege of working with 17 coaches from nine countries (Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Bulgaria, Germany, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Eritrea) on leveraging football as a powerful tool for social integration and personal development. This training was a collaborative project with the Football and Athletics Association of Westphalia (FLVW) and part of the “Welcoming through Sports” initiative by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), supported by the German Commissioner for Migration, Integration, and Refugees.
Holistic Training Approach
During the workshop, participants learned to plan their training sessions in a way that respects both the individual and shared characteristics of kids and youth. The course emphasized a holistic approach, addressing not only technical, tactical, and physical aspects of football but also focusing on social and personal development.
Key Questions Addressed
During the course we explored several important questions:
- How can we be role models?
- How can we promote respect on and off the pitch?
- How do we enable kids to transfer the skills they learn on the pitch to other areas of their lives, such as school and friendships?
Positive Impact and Future Plans
This training highlighted the significant role that coaches play in shaping young lives. By promoting values like respect, teamwork, and resilience, coaches can help young athletes apply these lessons beyond the football field, positively impacting their personal and academic lives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants and partners for their enthusiasm and commitment. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and making a positive impact through football.
